Training

Why training requires so much time:

  • In the three position event the positions you need to train for are prone, standing and kneeling

  • Prone is also an individual event, This requires extra training achieve the stamina needed for a 60 match as opposed to the 40 shots in three position.

  • Standing whilst not an individual event, is the position used to shoot the finals. If you wish to perform, you need to practice standing to the highest level.

  • Air rifle. Although this event is shot in the standing position it varies greatly from three positions. The Air Rifle match has a longer duration. It is a sixty shot match. Air Rifles are highly regulated by rules which prevent extensive customising. Hence Air rifle training has to be completed separate from three positions standing as there are vast differences with the equipment.

  • The positions shooters place themselves in to gain stability causes massive strain on the physiology of the individual. The body as a result also requires preparation in the form of stretching and warming up.
  • Physical preparation is also necessary off the range. Strengthening and conditioning is required to help the body cope with the unusual positions and strain. On average one hour is required to complete such a program.

  • Physical recovery is also required after all forms of training including the gym. The use of hydro pools etc requires thirty minutes of specified activities.

Conclusions

  • If a shooter trains for each position for only one hour a day that is four hours which is required in position.

  • Setting up for each position or changing to another on average takes at least ten minutes. So at least 40 minutes is required for equipment preparation.

  • Twenty minutes is required to prepare the body.

  • One hour is required for strengthening.

  • Thirty minutes is required for recovery.

  • A total of six and a half hours has already been allocated to training. In this time only basic shooting training has been completed. Two hours per position is desired on an international level. In the six and a half hours no time has been allocated to commuting, packing, un-packing, meal breaks or receiving coaching advice.
